Yanghai Tombs – the oldest stash was not random

Before prohibition, there was selection.

In the Yanghai tombs of western China, archaeologists found one of the most striking cannabis traces ever recorded: a cache of ancient, dried cannabis buried beside a man of high social status, probably a shaman, around 750 BCE.

The plant material was not a random bundle of hemp.

Laboratory analysis showed cultivated cannabis with high THC content. Even more importantly, the less psychoactive male parts had been removed. What remained was not industrial fibre, not seed crop, not rope material, but selected psychoactive plant matter.

This is why the Yanghai find matters.

It does not show cannabis as an accident of history.
It shows knowledge.

Someone knew which plant parts mattered. Someone selected, prepared and preserved them. Someone placed them close to the head of a dead man whose role was likely spiritual, medicinal or ritual.
