Hua Tuo – the lost powder before anaesthesia

Hua Tuo — The Lost Powder Before Anaesthesia

Not proof, hust a medical memory.
A lost recipe at the edge of surgery.

High in the Pamir Mountains, almost 3,000 metres above sea level, archaeologists found a trace that was not written in words.

It was burned into wood and stone.

At the 2,500-year-old Jirzankal cemetery in western China, wooden braziers contained charred stones and chemical residues of cannabis. The plant had not simply been stored, carried or buried. It had been burned, inhaled and made part of a mortuary ritual.

This is what makes the find so important.
The Yanghai tombs showed selected cannabis placed beside the dead.

Jirzankal shows smoke. Fire. Stone.
A closed ritual space.
A plant transformed into atmosphere.

For LIBERA HERBA, this is one of the oldest visible moments where cannabis becomes more than material. Not rope, not seed, not fibre — but presence.

A plant burned at the border between body and spirit.

A trace of people gathering around death, smoke, music, and altered perception at the edge of the ancient Silk Road.

Factual Note

The Chinese surgeon Hua Tuo of the Han dynasty is traditionally associated with early surgical anaesthesia using a preparation called Mafeisan (麻沸散 literally “cannabis boil powder”), mixed with wine. The exact formula has not survived.

The NCBI review notes that the mixture may have contained cannabis, but this remains uncertain. It also notes that the Chinese character má, associated with hemp/cannabis, appears in word formations related to numbness or anaesthesia.
