Baudelaire – Artificial Paradises

A candle, a knife,
and an artificial paradise.

In mid-19th-century Paris, hashish entered literature through velvet rooms, medical curiosity and dangerous imagination.

At the Club des Hashischins, writers and artists gathered at the Hôtel Pimodan / Hôtel de Lauzun to explore the effects of hashish, often in the form of dawamesk: a green paste made with cannabis resin, fat, honey and pistachios. Among the names attached to this circle were Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire and Alexandre Dumas.

Baudelaire later gave the experience its most famous literary chamber in Les Paradis artificiels. He did not write about hashish like a salesman. He wrote like someone entering a room with a candle and a knife.

He saw expansion, distortion, beauty, danger, theatricality and false heaven. He understood that cannabis could make ordinary words and simple ideas take on a strange new brightness — but he also refused to confuse intoxication with genius.
