In William Hogarth’s world, hemp is not romantic. It is work.

In A Harlot’s Progress, the fallen Moll Hackabout is shown inside a house of correction, forced into hard labour. One of the tasks associated with such places was hemp-beating: breaking and working the plant’s tough stems so the fibre could be separated and used.

This is a different kind of cannabis trace.

For LIBERA HERBA, this matters because cannabis history is not only the history of medicine, ritual or altered perception. It is also the history of material production — rope, cloth, sacks, sails, nets — and of the people whose bodies turned the plant into infrastructure. Before nylon, before plastic, before synthetic fibre, hemp helped bind the working world together.

But Hogarth reminds us that useful plants also have social histories.

A plant can clothe a civilisation.
