HEBRARIUM

Théophile Gautier – the Club of Hashish Eaters

Jirzankal — The Smoke at the Edge of the World

Cannabis entered literature
as a theatre of altered perception.

Before Baudelaire gave hashish its artificial paradise, Théophile Gautier opened the door to the room.

In 1846, Gautier published Le Club des Hachichins in the Revue des Deux Mondes, describing one of the famous hashish gatherings at the Hôtel Pimodan in Paris. The scene sits between literature, medicine, theatre and experiment: artists, writers, doctors, dawamesk, strange laughter, distorted perception, and the old human desire to step outside ordinary consciousness.

Gautier describes attending a séance of the club and being introduced to the “green jam” by a doctor, usually identified with Jacques-Joseph Moreau de Tours.

For LIBERA HERBA, Gautier belongs here because he turned the cannabis experience into literary atmosphere.

Not a edical report. Not a moral warning.
Not a political demand.
A room. A texture. A state of perception.

The famous language of synaesthesia — seeing sound, hearing colour, flesh becoming spirit, the self loosening into the universe — belongs to this 19th-century attempt to write intoxication as art.

Gautier did not simply describe hashish. He staged it.

And through that staging, cannabis entered Western literature as a theatre of altered perception.
