W.B. Yeats – hashish and the occult imagination

Jirzankal — The Smoke at the Edge of the World

Hashish beside poetry,
ritual and the hidden world.

W.B. Yeats did not enter hashish through bohemia alone. He entered it through vision.

At the end of the 19th century, Yeats moved through circles where poetry, symbolism, occult study, ceremonial magic and experiments with altered consciousness often touched the same table. Reports connect him with hashish experimentation, partly through Arthur Symons and the literary-occult world around the Rhymers’ Club and fin-de-siècle London.

For LIBERA HERBA, the importance is not to turn Yeats into a “cannabis poet”. That would be too easy. The trace is subtler.

Yeats was a poet of veils: visible and invisible worlds, masks, spirits, symbols, dreams, cycles, hidden correspondences. Hashish appears here as one more instrument in a larger search — not for intoxication as pleasure, but for altered perception as evidence that the ordinary mind might not be the only doorway.

Whether cannabis opened anything “true” is not the point.

The point is that one of the great poets of modernity lived in a world where the plant could be placed beside poetry, ritual, symbolism and the hunger to see beyond the surface.

Not proof of revelation. A trace of the wish to lift the veil.

Factual Note

Biographical and critical sources report that W.B. Yeats experimented with hashish in the 1890s, and that Arthur Symons was connected to this milieu. Sources also connect Yeats’ experiments with broader occult and Symbolist practices of the period.

Claims that hashish directly “unlocked the Anima Mundi” should be treated as interpretation unless tied to a precise primary passage.
