In the Encyclopédie, hemp is not exotic. It is knowledge.
Diderot and d’Alembert’s great Enlightenment project did not treat the plant as scandal, intoxication or superstition. It treated it as work made visible: fibre, tools, workshops, ropewalks, hands, machines, sequence, technique.
The plates of the Encyclopédie are almost sacred in their precision.
They show that civilisation is not built only by philosophers, kings and laws. It is built by people who know how to turn a stalk into fibre, fibre into thread, thread into rope, and rope into ships, trade, labour and power.

Factual Note
The Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers was edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert and published in the eighteenth century as a major Enlightenment project of knowledge, arts and crafts. It included 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates.
The hemp-related illustrations belong to the chanvre material in the plates, showing preparation and processing of hemp as practical craft and industrial knowledge rather than as intoxication or scandal. A modern presentation of these plates identifies them as illustrations of hemp preparation from the Encyclopédie’s plates.

Denis Diderot was the principal driving force behind the Encyclopédie. He helped turn scattered knowledge into a public project: philosophy, craft, labour, tools and technique placed on the same Enlightenment table.
Jean le Rond d’Alembert
1717–1783
French mathematician, physicist, philosopher, and music theorist
Jean le Rond d’Alembert was a mathematician, philosopher and co-editor of the Encyclopédie. His role helped frame the project as a rational map of knowledge, where science, arts and crafts belonged together.
