In The Count of Monte Cristo, hashish appears like an object from a secret treasury. In Chapter 31, “Italy: Sinbad the Sailor”, Franz d’Épinay is led into the Count’s hidden palace on the island of Monte Cristo. There, surrounded by Oriental luxury, mystery, servants, perfumes and theatrical power, he is offered a small portion of green hashish paste.
Dumas does not present the plant clinically.
He presents it as passage.
The hashish belongs to the Count’s world: outside ordinary law, outside ordinary society, outside ordinary time. It is part of the same architecture as the cave, the blindfold, the treasure, the disguise and the name “Sinbad”.

Factual Note
In Chapter 31 of Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo, “Italy: Sinbad the Sailor”, the Count, under the name Sinbad, offers Franz d’Épinay hashish in the form of a greenish paste or jam. The episode draws on Orientalist literary imagery and the 19th-century French fascination with hashish, including the milieu of the Club des Hashischins. Dumas himself is often associated with that Parisian hashish circle.
